FAQs

  • Participants will prepare meals together or separate, with the vibe of a hostel. Pantry staples, a few perishable items, and local (frozen) meat are included in the price of the stay. One night/week participants all prepare food and eat together at the Lagom House. One night/month the community is invited in for “Speaking with Bread”, an event highlighting the talented and unique humans of the Little Finger Lakes and building community.

  • Registration is offered on a sliding scale, making the opportunity for respite and restoration available to everyone who desires it.

We are grateful to the generous donors who make it possible for us to provide financial aid to those who need it. Please do not let financial concerns keep you from a attending.

Many participants receive some level of financial assistance based on their household income and personal situation. We are happy to work with you and your family to determine an appropriate level payment.

  • Seed money for this project came from a farm settled by Swedish immigrants, so we chose a uniquely Swedish adjective for our name.

Lagom (LAH-gome) describes the Swedish ideal of viewing things as “good enough,” or “just the right amount.” As we live into our 12th year as an organization, we feel as if this was the name we were meant to have. The word “Lagom” embodies much of what we want to be about. Read a beautifully illustrated article by Sarah Lazarovic in YES Magazine about LAGOM to get a better sense of the principles we strive to live more into each day.

We maintain hope that through community and kinship we will always have “just the right amount.” Our program is designed to instill the spirit of Lagom in participants, so all may leave more at peace with the bounty of life than when they came.

  • No, our programming is appropriate for people of all backgrounds who are open to asking themselves spiritual questions. Although directors Rock and Laurel are Christian, our community is made up of people from diverse spiritual backgrounds. We believe that developing a spiritual practice is a central piece of self awareness, self regulation, compassion, and happiness. We place no requirements on participants other than a willingness to learn from one another.

  • We are an LGBTQ+ welcoming community, and our program is designed to be a brave space for all individuals’ personal development. We believe that the gift of working with your hands is empowering for every person.

  • It’s true, our small and rural location is not a great fit for everybody. If being 15 minutes from the nearest fast-food and 40 minutes from the nearest city (Rochester, NY) makes you nervous, it might be quite an adjustment to be here.

However, many participants have come from urban and suburban backgrounds. We will work with you to make sure that the activities that sound most life-giving to you are what you get to try, and if you just want to sit and read your book, that’s fine too!

In general, if you are seeking more connection to what we call “the real”–nature, people, and the work of your hands–Respite & Restoration at Lagom Landing might be the perfect place for you to spend a few nights!
